The results of the vote, which closed on Saturday night, had been on Monday.Microsoft has pushed hard for international certification of Open Office XML (OOXML), the default file-saving format of Microsoft Office 2007, to improve its chances of winning government contracts and encourage developers to use the technology for new software applications and content. The company did not get the two-thirds majority needed to clinch the standard in an original vote in September, but got another shot in a second ballot that closed on Saturday night.Opponents of the Microsoft certification had argued that introducing a rival to the already ISO-approved Open Document Format (ODF), developed by Sun Microsystems (JAVA.O: Quote, Profile, Research), defeated the purpose of having standards.

Search engine giant Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research), which uses the open ODF standard in its document and spreadsheet applications, also lent its weight to the anti-Microsoft camp, citing concerns about the dependence of OOXML on Microsoft proprietary formats. The ODF technology allows users to save documents in a variety of formats, including Microsoft’s.

Synopsis

LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR THIRD YEAR IN MUMBAI:
DatacenterDynamics returns to the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Mumbai - 9th May

Building on the success of the last two years, we have set a date for our 3rd Annual Mumbai event. As a focal point for end-users, consultants and solution providers, the DatacenterDynamics Conference & Expo has quickly established itself as Mumbai’s largest gathering of professionals involved in the design, build and operational management of 24/7 datacenters and mission critical IT infrastructure . It is an unrivalled education & networking opportunity for the industry, where our regular audience is characterized by senior representatives of the financial sector, trading firms, service enterprises, information technology, media and film, and other top companies operating in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The systems, applications, operational requirements and infrastructure technologies coming online today and tomorrow are transforming the facility and information technology infrastructure: from soaring energy costs and demands to reduce carbon emissions, the power of bladeservers, vitualization, grids and utility computing, inherent rising thermal management problems, requests for more power per rack; and the need for intelligent racks and automation tools requiring new sensors and tools has transformed our industry and daily lives.

Many IT specialists have learned that they must attend and their participation has improved their understanding of the interrelationships between the two departments and in fact led to speedier problem solving in live situations. This year again we aim to highlight the commonalities, and help build a common language.

Our trademark multi-streamed 1 day conference program will update time conscious Datacenter and IT Mission Critical Infrastructure professionals with the latest strategies and thinking on how to overcome the next big challenges to face our industry, our community and their businesses.
